13th Edition – Etno Jazz Festival Karlovac

Mary Coughlan is one of the most interesting Irish singers, and one might say – a legitimate legend.
She is known for the peculiar, emotional interpretation of blues, jazz and rock standards. Her discography now contains 14 albums. Beside her singing career, she also had experience as an actress. Mary belongs to a particular art circle that cannot possibly leave the audience indifferent. She has interpreted her life, rich in ups and downs, by singing throughout the world and leaving the audience with a striking and powerful emotional impact. Johnny Taylor, also from Ireland, will perform as a pianist and the bassist Sven Bujic from Karlovac, who has performed for a long time with Mary in Ireland, will also be of a special interest to the local audience.

Drummer Branimir Gazdik has played in numerous jazz settings. He has also been active in pop rock  scene. After the album “FRIENDLY” released in 2009. and nominated for the Porin Prize in the category of Best Jazz Album, he releases its second independent album  “LINK”  in 2018. The album was also nominated for the Porin Prize in all jazz categories. The music performed by the Quartet is a synergy of various styles (jazz, funk, latino, world music…) fused into a common “fusion” expression. Beside Gazdik, Quartet are the award winning Croatian musicians Matej Kovačević and Vedran Ružić, as well as one of the most prestigious Slovenian saxophonist Lenart Krečič.

Ralph Towner – a guitarist, a pianist and a composer, is truly a great jazz musician. He has recorded a large number of albums, some of them being anthologies. He collaborated with many of the greatest names in the jazz world. Born in 1940. in Chehalis, Washington, he began his career as a classical pianist. In the 1960s he started playing the guitar. His performance has been influenced by various ethno cultures and his work has been well marked in that way. He founded the legendary Oregon group in 1970s which has released a series of highly influential albums in that period, combining folk music, Indian shapes, and free jazz improvisation. At the same time, Towner started a longstanding relationship with the famous ECM publishing house that has released a large number of his albums. He is so significant in the world of music and his biography and discography are so great that we can mention here just some of the greats with whom he worked: Weather Report, Egberto Gismonti, Gary Peacock, Jan Garbarek, Larry Coryell… The classical guitar is still a rare occurrence in jazz. Regarding this, Ralph Towner is one of the music innovators. After the solo concert in Poreč in 2012. and the Oregon 2015. concert in Lisinski Small Hall, we are proud and happy to be able to announce that Ralph Towner will perform at the Karlovac festival. He will play solo a classical guitar.
